Wormwood by Garth Ennis & Jacen Burrows

"Garth Ennis (Holywood, January 16, 1970 ) is a British comic book writer, "reads the indispensable Wikipedia. But then you start thinking of his works, in particular of that masterpiece that is "Preacher," which is available commercially in just a box of 100 € with the complete set, the only way to get it, inter alia, as that is worn out and unavailable, but let's not forget "The boys "... When you think about this you realize you have a real bomb in his hands. This is one of the authors discussed the language, his use of violence, for his "contempt" for the original super selfish world, to which add a unique (for this writer) black humor. In short, we are in the presence of the sample of "politically scorrect" par excellence, and we have a comic book in my hands really unique and very interesting in its being all this excess.


"Wormwood Chronicles" published by BD, is the first volume of an irregular cadence miniseries (which fortunately is not it?) began in 2009. The characters are:

Danny Wormwood : Antichrist and producer of television serials. Armageddon has decided not to allow humanity to itself. It has powers but it can use them once a day with the death.

Jay (Jesus) the son of God , sent to earth to take part in Armageddon. After refusing a result ends up in a coma for two years due to a clash between police and his anti-war movement against the war in Iraq. During coma has lost a bit 'of his mental faculties.

Jimmy : A talking rabbit, one of the few friends Danny.Gli like harass people online, especially Star Wars fans.

Pope Jacko : The Pope of the Catholic Church. Australian became Pope, because the other candidate was black. Sexually deviant is in league with Satan

References and similarities of Wormwood, voluntary or not (I incline to the latter interpretation in the first case analyzed), are indeed numerous. How kind of story, but also - in part - to say that the dialogue can be called into question, even with proper proportions and attezioni, "John Doe" by Bartoli & Recchioni, where the main character and supporting actors are some earthly incarnations of entity (usually) abstract such as death, hunger, time, plague, war etc ... but if this is a reference that, maybe, the star Ennis might not have on hand (and it would be a shame, because "John Doe" is a fine comic serial made in Italy), of some of the mysterious Manara and Jodorowsky, "The Borgias" is present in the way of representing the pope and his court in Rome.


Small aside: "The Borgias" are mysterious because it had to be a trilogy. It came out two volumes, beautiful, and then nothing ... the silence ... not been heard of the third chapter (if you have news, please postatemele ...).


In that work of Manara and Jodorowsky Pope Innocent VIII, and especially the court of Pope Borgia (Alexander VI), are described in raw: the Beyond the historical truth, which in this case, the story of the two authors "lighter" and sweetened, in fact, the idea behind the comics is that of a large fresco on the removal power of the Holy Roman Empire. Even in the work of Ennis the papal court in question, which comes immediately after the two historical present to us, one of the recent past, the other still ongoing, is seen in full decline of customs and traditions, corrupt to the nth degree, walking and perverse. However, it is incorrect and it would soften what, for a precise determination of the author, is neither sweet, nor prettify or to be administered in the light version: the court of the pope's Australian is, in fact, a brothel in the sky open every perversion known and imagined, permitted and allowed. We will see, however, in terms that are managed and displayed it because it's what makes this an interesting text to understand something of the dynamics of the imaginary but, above all, it was built in the contemporary age. Without doubt, from this point of view, this is one of the best productions of the career of Garth Ennis. And here, from which I was old player, the hairdresser, erotic comics, I can safely say that in their design and shots there is nothing vulgar, pornographic, or even to: eroticism is of great, strong and driven, a little perverted (do not deny it), but it is just sex (and only the Anglo-Saxons as they do). There are tables that, in the jargon, 'make the blood ", such as women and the bodies that are represented there. If the word were not abused, I would say that bodies of men and women are portrayed in post-modern, that is, images constructed to celebrate the physical perfection, it is, then, eroticism produced table and then passed off promoting aesthetic impossible, but that they achieve their aim which is not the mundane, low to cause upsets (we are not just in pornography), but to show what it is, today, the desire, in all its facets. Emblematic in this regard, the entry into the scene of the incarnation of "The Whore of Babylon", a beautiful woman who moves in the worst fantasies bartender ("nose shit", you find out why ... was found between the most brilliant in history), a man crude and vulgar to Moe from the Simpsons (but with much less charm ...), which does not enjoy the beauty of the aggressive "Black Venus", but think only of personal enjoyment that could be drawn. This, of course, is the most vulgar of the team of customers and the construction of the table because it helps crystal clear, effective. In summary: there is eroticism everywhere, as there is now in our society (from magazine covers to carbon copy), but this may be a sign of true art of seduction, or a pretext for launching the sinister desire to possess and worst human instincts (not just the boys).


Then there is the rich vein narrative of Christ's return, and here the tradition is "long": you go, the best known, from "The Grand Inquisitor of the master Fyodor Dostoevsky to film B-70s (but do not miss this link: www.ilritornodigesu.it ). So this is a literature that has long bibliographies and filmographies, vast and rich. In fact, in overturning morality that characterizes all Wormwood, the two appear realistic, disillusioned and, therefore, represented the most human among humans, and most divine among the saints who are in the game. This tip is very interesting because it shows how, in fact, a bit of healthy rebellion against the established order, today, is at least one parameter must be normal. I would say even more: the last bastion in the boundless sea of \u200b\u200bthe absence of all (public spirit, values, ideals, love, eros, friendship, and so on ...). Everything is fake, but this lie is so false that it needs only and exclusively of liars, crooks and bastards to stand. And if these actors are is obvious that the prevailing ethic is, in fact, their; ethics that, at this point is clear, is always inspired by a hidden obscene that, in fact, it would real and visible. In other words, the back of obscene is what keeps alive the realities and ethics, in fact. But when it comes to the scope of power, plus the obscene perversion and ruthless cynicism. Therefore, if we are dealing with pirates and merchants, we will have to do with their ethics, with the gold reality, with their imagination and their way of seeing the world.


It is true that Wormwood work is hard and cruel where, finally, the ideology of the "politically correct" concept dear to the philosopher Slavoj Zizek, who has written a very interesting, especially in "From tragedy to farce" (Ponte alle Grazie), here is finally brought to its knees. There is no taste for the vulgar and even the search for the word or the situation striking: Ennis undermines the politically correct because it states the truth that you do not have the courage to say, but everyone knows that. It is not nothing to be surprised and even unnecessary dispatches Wikileaks model, but notes that truth, however, Zizek and here there is still help, we are used to store patterns as necessary to keep up our reality. The thing is complex, I realize, but the cartoon is that, of highly topical themes: violence, sex and perversion of power, social deviance of religious people (and I was soft in my writing ...). What the cartoon show, then, is not our reality is not a bubble over our society. It is more: it is a work that shows us who we are and, more importantly, what we want both our company and the value here, what we are willing to tolerate because our society is what in fact is (and we want to be). Here is the short circuit of course, because I wanted everything to be so, in fact, this company perverse, cynical and ruthless, so we've really created in His image and likeness - of that imaginary we want because we do not see . We gave the body, feelings, dreams and humanity. We have made visible and now frightens us, disturb us, puts us in a crisis. That's why a work like Wormwood can disturb the reader, but in reality there is no question of something known, but only of what it becomes - at last - visible. Capita now, because I did not want to put the warnings?


In conclusion, the verdict on the work. Positive, no doubt, but you must pause to see what direction will the series. ... Unfortunately, as mentioned above, will be at irregular intervals.
